As faith in U.S. political system hits historic lows, organizers announce that
LAUNCH OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT WILL BE AUGUST 24-28 IN MADISON, WISCONSIN

(MADISON, WI) ~ The eyes of the nation will return to Madison, Wisconsin, August 24-28, as nearly 1,000 community, labor, and student organizers gather at the first Democracy Convention to launch a movement to bring democracy to the United States.

As described at http://www.DemocracyConvention.org, the purpose of this first national Democracy Convention is to, "strengthen democracy where it matters most -- in our communities, our schools, our workplaces and local economies, our military, our government, our media, our constitution," and to unite pro-democracy efforts in all areas of American life, "in a common, deeply rooted, broad based, movement for democracy."

Organizers of the convention know that the timing for launching a democracy movement in the United States has never been better, or more urgent:

"Because of the events of the past three years, the desire for real democracy is at an all time high," said Ben Manski, executive director of the Liberty Tree Foundation, and chair of the 2011 Democracy Convention. "Even so, we began laying the foundations for this new movement over a decade ago." The convention is a project of Liberty Tree, which is based in Madison and was the sponsor of the Wisconsin Wave of anti-austerity protests there.

Conferences meeting within the confines of the Democracy Convention will include the Constitutional Reform Conference, convened by Move to Amend; Democratic Defense Conference, co-convened by The Progressive and Veterans for Peace; Earth Democracy Conference, convened by the Alliance for Democracy; Economic Democracy Conference, convened by It's Our Economy; Education for Democracy Conference, convened by the United Council of UW Students; Local Democracy Conference, co-convened by Democracy Unlimited and Progressive Dane; Media Democracy Conference, co-convened by Workers Independent News and WORT Community Radio; Racial Equality Conference, co-convened by Freedom, Inc. and Groundwork; and the Representative Democracy Conference, co-convened by the Independent Progressive Politics Network and the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

The Democracy Convention is an ongoing project of the Liberty Tree Foundation, and co-convened by Move to Amend, the Alliance for Democracy, and The Progressive magazine. Major Sponsors include the Center for Media and Democracy and the Coffee Party. Over 50 organizations, unions, and businesses are sponsors or endorsers of the Democracy Convention.
